Newly-started enterprises in Sweden 2010

References to 'new companies' indicate, in this context, companies which have recently begun operations or have recommenced after having been dormant for at least two years. The statistics donor includes companies which have been reactivated due to change of owner, any legal changes or other reorganization. The statistics on new companies differ from other statistics in this area. The statistics produced from new registrations taken from the Swedish Companies Registration Office or direct excerpts from Statistics Sweden's company database, FDB, also includes various types of re-organization. 

The information from the Swedish Companies Registration Office does not include individual entrepreneurs who do not protect their business name. The statistics are based on a survey study and consist, for the majority of the given variables, of a selection of companies.

The number of newly established enterprises in 2010 was 66 681, representing an increase of 12 per cent compared to 2009. 

Categorized by industry, the biggest differences from 2009 were occurred within Transportation and warehousing, finance, insurance and real estate as well as arts, entertainment and leisure, with increases of 27.23 and 20 per cent respectively. Compared with 2009, the number of new businesses increased by 15 per cent in Stockholm and Västra Götaland counties and 7 per cent in Skåne. The largest increase in one county, 22 per cent, occurred in Västerbotten county.

The number of new companies in relation to the population aged 16 - 64 increased nationwide, to 11.1 companies per 1,000 inhabitants. The corresponding figure in 2009 was 10.0. By county, the highest establishment frequency was in Stockholm county with 15.3 companies per 1,000 residents. Approximately 19, 300, or 29 per cent of new companies, were established as limited companies.
 
In 2009, 21 per cent of new companies were established as limited companies. 1 April 2010, the required minimum share capital decreased from SEK 100, 000 to SEK 50, 000. The number of businesses started by a woman or several women was just under 21, 300, or 32 per cent of new business. The corresponding figure in 2009 was 33 per cent. The number of businesses started by women and men jointly amounted to 7 per cent of all new businesses. The corresponding figure in 2009 was 6 per cent

In 2010, the number of newly established enterprises started by a person of foreign extraction was just under 13,100 The proportion of new business with a person of foreign extraction was 20 per cent in 2010, compared with 17 per cent in 2009. Categorized by age, 26 per cent of new companies were started in 2010 by individuals up to 30 years and 50 per cent of companies by individuals aged 31-50 years. This means an increase of 18 per cent in the former group and 9 per cent in the latter. In the 'over 50' age group, the number of new businesses increased by 12 per cent.
