Newly-started enterprises in Sweden 2017

The number of start-up enterprises in 2017 totalled 68,887 compared to 71,825 in 2016, a decrease of 4 per cent. In 2016, the number of start-ups increased by 2 per cent.

Allocated by sector, 10 per cent of the start-ups were in the area of Construction, with 11 per cent in the area of Wholesale and Retail Trade and Service of Motor Vehicles, and 11 per cent were in Legal and Financial Consulting. Start-ups declined by 2 per cent in Construction and 6 per cent in Wholesale and Retail Trade and Service of Motor Vehicles, while the number of new enterprises remained unchanged in the area of Legal and Financial Consulting.

The area with the largest decline in the number of start-ups was Human Health and Social Work, with 18 per cent. This can be compared to an increase by 2 per cent in this area in 2016, and by 25 per cent in 2015.

The number of start-ups declined by 9 per cent in the area of Marketing and Advertising, and by 7 per cent in Finance, Insurance and Real Estate.

The area with the highest percentages of start-ups in relation to the number of existing enterprises (not counting the Unspecified Industry category) was Finance, Insurance and Real Estate, with 11.3 start-ups per 100 existing enterprises.

Allocated by legal form, 44 per cent of the new enterprises in 2017 were set up as limited companies. Compared with 2016, the number of limited companies decreased by 3 per cent.

The number of start-ups declined by 7 per cent in Stockholm Country from 2016, and by 2 per cent in Western Götaland County. In the County of Skåne, the number of start-ups saw a 1 per cent decline, while in Södermanland and Gotland Counties, start-ups declined by 10 per cent.

The establishment frequency for start-up enterprises shows the number of start-ups in relation to the population. Allocated by county, the establishment frequency was highest in Stockholm County with 14.7 start-ups per 1,000 inhabitants between 16 and 64 years of age, followed by Skåne and Jämtland Counties with 11.4 and 11.3, respectively, per 1,000 inhabitants.

The number of start-ups led by women declined by 5 per cent and represented 32 per cent of the total start-ups, a percentage that was unchanged from 2016.

Allocated by sector and gender, 75 per cent of the enterprises in the Other Service Enterprises and Personal Services are led by women. About half of the enterprises in the areas of Other Specialized Consulting and Veterinary Services, Education, and Human Health and Social Work are led by women. In the areas of Construction and Transport and Warehousing, about 90 per cent of the enterprises are led by men.

Allocated by county and gender, 37 per cent of the start-ups in Gotland were started by women, the highest such percentage in the country.

The number of new enterprises led by persons with foreign origins represented 29 per cent of start-ups, a decrease of 1 per cent. The sectors with highest percentages of enterprises led by persons with foreign origins were Hotels and Restaurants, as well as Transport and Warehousing, with 62 per cent and 55 per cent, respectively.

Allocated by county and origin, 35 per cent of the start-ups in Stockholm County are led by a person with foreign origins, in contrast to 11 per cent in Gotland County and 12 per cent in Jämtland County.
