Newly-started enterprises in Sweden 2020

The number of newly-started enterprises in 2020 totaled 73,687 compared with 66,892 in 2019, an increase of 10 per cent.

Start-ups increased by 17 per cent in construction, by 6 per cent in legal and financial consulting and by 28 per cent in retail trade compared with 2019. Unless otherwise stated, all comparisons refer to 2019. Retail trade includes internet commerce. Internet commerce increased by 54 per cent and other retail trade by 8 per cent.

The number of new companies decreased by 12 per cent in hotel and accommodation operations as well as in culture, entertainment and leisure. Within the latter group, the number of new companies decreased by 21 per cent in cultural and entertainment activities. In leisure and sports activities, start-ups increased by 28 per cent.

Distributed by legal form, 49 per cent of companies started in 2020 were limited companies, compared with 44 per cent. The number of newly started limited companies increased by 24 per cent and the number of sole traders by 1 per cent. New trading and limited partnerships decreased by 23 per cent. Trading and limited partnerships accounted for 2 per cent of the newly started companies in 2020.

The number of newly started limited companies increased in all sectors with the exception of hotels and accommodation, where the number of new companies decreased by 8 per cent. The largest increase of 61 per cent occurred in other service activities.

In Stockholm County, the number of new companies increased by 10 per cent, in Västra Götaland County by 9 per cent and in Skåne County by 10 per cent.
The number of new companies led by women increased in 2020 by 7 per cent and the number of companies led by men by 12 per cent. The proportion of start-ups led by women was 32 per cent, a stable proportion compared with previous years.

The number of new companies led by people of foreign descent increased by 16 per cent and companies led by people of Swedish descent by 8 per cent. Among people of foreign descent, start-ups increased by 25 to 30 per cent in wholesale and commission trade, retail trade, construction and manufacturing. Distributed by origin within each industry, 67 per cent of the new companies in restaurant operations were led by people of foreign origin. In transport and storage, this share amounted to 66 per cent. In agriculture, forestry and fishing, 90 per cent of the new companies were led by people of Swedish descent.

In 2020, the number of companies started by people 30 years or younger increased by 14 per cent, by 11 per cent in the age group 31 to 50 years and by 6 per cent in the age group over 50 years. Distributed by age within each industry, 43 per cent of the companies in publishing, radio, TV, film and telecommunications were started by people 30 years or younger. In advertising and marketing, the corresponding share was 41 per cent. In finance, insurance and real estate, as well as architectural, technical consulting and research, the shares of new companies started by people over the age of 50 amounted to 37 per cent.
